Internet going down?  Having to restart or reset your router only to find that your super special Dish Receiver is not working properly?  Fear not there is a simple solution that may help.

In this scenario, the Dish service is working properly but the router/modem for your internet provider is having issues.  Before you start calling tech support, ready to blast some poor call center rep, try this method:

1. Unplug all devices connected to your internet provider’s modem (the little guy plugged directly to the cable coming out of your wall)
2. Turn off the power and wait a few seconds
3. Plug the power back into the modem
4. Wait for the little blinking signs of life (no blinking lights or just solid lights is not a good sign and you may need to call to check if there is an outage)
5. Once the modem has restarted take the Ethernet cable from the Dish Receiver that you unplugged with everything else and plug it into the first port
6. Turn on the Dish Receiver and the device will connect as long as your broadband connection is working
7. Lastly, reconnect your other computers and devices (in any order) and you should be back up and running

Many Dish Retailers out there just want to make a quick buck.  These retailers will make the service appear cheaper and then charge you up to $49.99 for the privilege of setting up your Dish Network service with them.

Just look at this shady retailer horror story from my3cents.com:

They took $49.99 Of my card and I never seen the $1.00 That they took out when they did the credit check. I told them not to take money out for service because I was just calling to see if it was cheaper then Comcast.

She told me no ms we will not do that until you call us back to set up service, I did not go threw with it because they did not offer internet in my area and it was dial up not high speed. They never called me in to weeks to see if I wanted to set a date and time to get service hooked up but they took the money with no problem after they said they will not take until I call back. Now they saying it will take 3-5 days to get back on my card and when I called the lady was real nasty and loud to me I asked to talk to her boss she put me on hold for 10-15 min then picked the phone up and then it was hung up.

Most of us enjoy Dish Network from SatelliteTVs for the great sports line ups and channels.  Before you buy, make sure you know how the blackouts work to avoid frustration and headaches!

National Blackouts

These occur when a local channel, or Regional Sports Network (RSNET), purchases the rights to the event in the designated geographical location or ZIP code (DMA). In these cases, the event will not be available to any channel that is outside of that region.

Games are occasionally blacked out on national sports coverage channels such as ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, TNT, etc.

Regional Market Blackouts

These occur when a national channel such as ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, TNT, etc., purchases the rights to the event. In these cases, the event will not be available to any regional channel within that team’s territory unless a regional channel purchases the rights to the event.

Each sports league determines team territories differently. For example, an NBA team and an MLB team from the same market may have drastically different local blackout areas. Blackouts on RSNETs are not based on arena sell-outs.

Caused by poor weather, damaged cable, misaligned dish, malfunctioning equipment, or major changes in the home such as new roof, new carpeting, etc.

1. Check for Obstruction to Dish

Check for anything obstructing the signal to your satellite dish such as tree branches, severe rain, or snow build-up. If it is safe to do so, remove the obstruction or wait for it to pass.

2. Reset Receiver

If the issue is only on ONE receiver, unplug the DISH receiver for 10 seconds and plug back in.

Please note: It may take up to 5 minutes for the reset process to be completed.

3. Check Receiver-to-Wall Configuration

If issue is only on ONE receiver, check that the wiring between your DISH receiver and your wall outlet is configured properly using dish.com/wiring.

4. Secure Receiver-to-Wall Connections

If you are experiencing the issue on only ONE receiver, check that the connections between your DISH receiver, the wall, and any devices in between are hand tight.

Case in point… DON’T Touch the Dish once installed!!

A DVR recording is usually deleted by a user, but the hard drive is also automatically managed based on available storage space and copy protection standards.

Prevent Users From Deleting Recordings

Set locks on the DVR to prevent recorded events from being deleted.

To protect a recording, select Protect on the information screen for that recording.

Not Enough Storage Space

If your DVR runs out of storage space, existing recordings will be deleted to make room for new recordings. Only recordings that are not protected are deleted.

To protect a recording, select Protect on the information screen for that recording.

Deleted By Copy Protection

Copy Protection rules allow only one copy of a recording to exist. If you have moved a recording to another storage device, such as an external hard drive, the original recording will be deleted from your DVR.
